Health and safety hazards for computer users15 April 2005

Hands on a laptop

Most of our jobs these days revolve around using computers. In fact in our line of business we're highly dependent on them. But we need to be aware of some of the risks and hazards attached to this dependency on computers.

Repetitive strain Injury (RSI) is one such hazard. In reality, RSI is a commonly used term for several injuries that can arise of incorrect use of IT equipment. All conditions relate to damage done to one or more of the muscles, bones, nerves or soft tissue due to constant, recurring motions. What's worrying is that RSI can cause permanent damage to the hands, wrists, neck and shoulders.

Another syndrome that's linked to RSI is Carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome starts as a tingling or numbness in your hand and wrist and then results in a sharp, piercing pain through the wrist and up your arm. Repetitive hand movements like typing can cause this syndrome.

With both of the above, there are some common measures you can take to avoid RSI or Carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Ensure your workplace and workstations meet a range of requirements like clarity of clarity of image or adjustable chairs
  • Take a break - make sure you get up and walk around for five minutes after every half-hour at your computer. Don't stare are your computer screen the whole day.
  • Ensure that your workstation is set up correctly. You need to be in a straight line with your keyboard and the display screen. Don't sit at an angle.
  • Make sure you have regular eye tests. Some companies offer this to their employees
  • Ensure there is an adequate level of lighting. Do not work with a direct glare on the screen.
  • If you have back problems do not resort to carrying heavy laptops to and from work - inform your managers as to what your issues are.
  • If you already feel a strain then invest in a Visual Display Unit (VDU) and wrist rests that come as attachments with keyboards
  • Try typing with your hands straight and make sure your keyboard is lower than your elbows.
