How wireless networking can improve your business13 July 2005

Wireless networks are becoming the standard connection method for more and more businesses. Increased use of laptop computers and an increase in worker mobility has fuelled this demand for wireless networks as businesses realise the cost and efficiency benefits available.

The current standard for creating wireless networks and 'hotspots' for businesses is Wi-Fi (the 802.11b and 802.11g standards). It basically works by sending a normal networking signal over a wireless frequency similar to a cordless phone, allowing users to use their computers to access the Internet or internal network anywhere within the wireless area.

So what are the advantages?

Increased accessibility

Wireless networks can allow you to access your broadband Internet connection from anywhere in the office or building. You could move from one area of the office to another with your computer but without with the wires. You and your staff can roam the building without losing the connection, or having to log in again on a new machine in a different location.

Flexibility

Setting up a wireless network also has benefits in terms of flexibility. While travelling about, meeting clients and attending conferences you can access wireless networks with your laptop on the move and then return to your office without the need to swap files or mess with cables. As your business adapts and expands, wireless networks allow the flexibility to move your physical office space without costly rewiring.

Reduced costs

Wireless networks can reduce costs too. They are usually cheaper to install and maintain and are often much simpler than wired alternatives. Adding new users is easy and hassle free, without the need to add new wire networks and shift furniture. A report from WLANA states that 92 per cent of respondents interviewed believe there is a definite economic and business benefit after installation and that return on investment occurred in less than a year.

Increased productivity

As users of wireless devices can access information from remote locations without the need to be tied to a hard-wired connection, productivity gets a boost. The availability of wireless networking at a wide range of places around the world gives users the ability to work at times and locations where it may previously have not been possible.
