Remote Access - Global access for the competitive edge22 July 2005

With the ever-increasing need to travel and be away from the office it can be frustrating not to have access to your computer and all the vital information stored on it. Thankfully there is a solution to this problem in remote access.

Remote access is the ability to use a computer or a network from a remote distance, even in different countries. It allows you to view and use not just the information on your office based PC - but also your applications, information on the company servers, your business intranet and e-mail - in fact anything you can normally access from your office PC.

The Benefits

Global connectivity - Remote access services let all the parts of your organisation, no matter how remote - reach the information they need at anytime. This means that travelling to meetings and conferences or even going on holiday need to force you out of the loop and what is effectively down-time becomes productive-time.

Furthermore, being able to access business information from any global location can often give you the competitive edge, allowing you to respond as events demand.

Economy - By delivering access via in-country calls, a service such as BT Remote Internet is also highly economical because it eliminates the cost of making international calls to ISPs or corporate networks.

Consequently even small branch offices or mobile workers can have dial-up access to the Internet through which they may access corporate LAN, intranet, e-mail, etc. This leads to better communication within your business, greater efficiency and potential cost savings.

How it works

  • To use a Remote Access solution, such as BT's Remote Access Pack, all you need is a computer with an Internet connection. To ensure security, state-of-the-art Advanced Encryption Standard 128-bit encryption, dual passwords and end-to-end user authentication is used.
  • Once logged in, you can work on your PC as if you were sitting in front of it. You can open files, access your network, and send and receive e-mails - you have full access to everything.
  • You can even remotely run a program on your PC desktop - it doesn't need to be installed on the computer you're using to access your PC, as well as transfer files, folders or whole directories to your present location. Printing is also available.
  • The system also allows you to give someone else access to your PC - for technical support, for example, saving costs on office call-out fees. You could also use it for viewing data during a conference call.
